What is choghadiya?
Choghadiya divides the day, from sunrise to sunset, into eight equal parts, and the night into eight more. Each is ruled by a planet and named for its quality. It is used across Gujarat, Rajasthan and North India to choose a good time for travel, business and new beginnings.
Amrit, Shubh and Labh are auspicious. Char is neutral, and favoured for travel. Udveg, Kaal and Rog are avoided. The day's first choghadiya is ruled by the weekday's own planet, which is why the sequence differs every day of the week.
How it is calculated
Planet positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard in India and Nepal. Sunrise and sunset are the visible ones, the upper edge of the Sun with atmospheric refraction, as almanacs print them. Each limb of the panchang is listed with the exact time it ends, so a tithi or nakshatra that changes during the day shows both.
