Kundli Matching (Guna Milan)
Enter the bride's and groom's birth details to calculate the 36-point Ashtakoota match, the doshas and their cancellations, and what the score means.
What is kundli matching?
Kundli matching, or kundali milan, is the traditional comparison of two birth charts before marriage. The standard method across North India and Nepal is Ashtakoota guna milan: eight factors (kootas), each comparing the bride's and groom's Moons, scored to a total of 36 points.
| Koota | What it measures | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | Temperament in work and duty, and whether the two outlooks sit easily together | 1 |
| Vashya | Mutual attraction, and the balance of influence between the two | 2 |
| Tara | The harmony of the two birth stars, read for wellbeing and fortune together | 3 |
| Yoni | Physical and instinctive compatibility | 4 |
| Graha Maitri | Friendship between the two minds, through the planets ruling each Moon sign | 5 |
| Gana | Basic temperament: gentle, practical or fiery | 6 |
| Bhakoot | How the two Moon signs sit to each other, read for family welfare and finances | 7 |
| Nadi | Constitution and health, traditionally including the health of children | 8 |
| Total | 36 | |
What the score really means
Almanacs treat 18 as the minimum. We calculated the exact odds over every possible pair of Moon positions, and the average couple scores 20.8. About 70% of all pairings reach 18, so a passing score is the normal case rather than a rare blessing, and a low one is a reason to look closer rather than a verdict. How every score compares.
Doshas in matching
Two kootas carry a named dosha when they score zero. Nadi dosha (the same nadi) occurs in exactly one couple in three by chance, and Bhakoot dosha (Moon signs 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 apart) in one in two. Together, about 69% of all couples have at least one. The texts give cancellations for both, and the result above shows which apply. Nadi dosha · Bhakoot dosha.
Mangal dosha is checked separately from each full chart. The tradition is concerned when only one partner has it in effect; when both do, it is considered balanced.
Variations between almanacs
The eight kootas are standard, but three of the scoring tables, Vashya, Yoni and Gana, differ slightly between almanacs, so another site may give a score half a point or a point different. South India uses a different system, Dashakoota (Porutham), with ten factors. This calculator follows the common North Indian tables throughout.
How this calculator works
Each person's Moon is calculated with the Swiss Ephemeris and the Lahiri ayanamsa, using the timezone history of the birthplace, the same engine as the full kundli. Both charts are computed in your browser: neither person's birth details are sent to us.
