What is Mangal dosha?

Mangal dosha, also called Kuja dosha or being “Manglik”, is a placement of Mars thought to strain marriage. In its core form, given in the classical text Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Mars sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the ascendant with no benefic planet on it. Later and regional traditions add the 2nd house, and count from the Moon and from Venus as well as from the ascendant.

What this calculator does differently

Most calculators stop at “Manglik: yes”. This one checks Mars from the ascendant, the Moon and Venus. It applies each recognised cancellation and names its source: classical, later classical, regional or modern. The result is graded as none, mild, moderate or strong rather than a bare yes or no.

Folk cancellations, such as the Moon or Mars in certain nakshatras, are shown so you know they exist, but they are never counted, because they have no textual basis.

How common is Mangal dosha?

Far more common than its reputation suggests, and how common depends almost entirely on which rule you use. We cast 20,000 charts with this engine for random birth times and places, and counted.

Under the core rule in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th from the ascendant, with no benefic on it), it appeared in 21.0% of charts, about one chart in five. Add the later extensions (the 2nd house, and counting from the Moon and Venus as well) and it appears in 88.7%, about nine charts in ten. That is simple arithmetic: six houses out of twelve, from three starting points, leave few charts untouched.

Once the recognised cancellations are applied, it was cancelled outright in 46.4% of charts, mild in 17.0%, and at moderate or strong severity in 25.4%. So most people told they are Manglik have the dosha only under the widest definition, and often a cancelled form of it.

Every cancellation this calculator checks

Each cancellation removes a share of the dosha according to its source. The classical exception removes all of it, and folk beliefs remove nothing. The calculator lists which ones apply to your chart.

The calculator also scales the result by Mars's own strength (Shadbala), and counts the ascendant twice as heavily as the Moon or Venus. It gives the 2nd-house form half weight, because it concerns speech and family rather than the partner.

The 28-years belief

A widespread belief holds that Mangal dosha ends at the age of 28. No classical text supports it. The calculator does not use it, and neither should anyone asking you to wait to marry.

How this calculator works

Planetary positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris, the reference used by professional astrology software, converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard in India and Nepal.

Your birth time is converted using the timezone history of your birthplace, including old offsets such as Nepal's +05:30 before 1986 and wartime clock changes. Getting that wrong shifts every position, and generic calculators often do. The chart is calculated in your browser: your birth date and time are never sent to us, and the place search sends only the town name you type.

Frequently asked questions

How common is Mangal dosha?
Under the core classical rule, in about 21.0% of charts. With every later extension counted, in about 88.7%, and in 46.4% it is cancelled.
Does Mangal dosha end at 28?
No classical text says so. The belief is widespread but has no textual basis.
What cancels Mangal dosha?
The classical exception is a benefic planet joining or aspecting Mars. Later traditions add others, such as Jupiter’s aspect, Mars in its own sign or certain signs in certain houses. The calculator applies each and names where it comes from.
Is Mangal dosha checked from the Moon as well as the ascendant?
The core rule counts from the ascendant. Counting from the Moon and Venus comes from later and regional traditions, so the calculator reports those forms but gives them less weight.
What if both partners are Manglik?
Traditionally a matching dosha in the partner’s chart is held to balance it. Even so, Mangal dosha is one factor among many, and in a large share of charts it is cancelled.
