What is a dasha?

A dasha is a planetary period. Vedic astrology times events by which planet's period is running, and the Vimshottari system, the most widely used, assigns a 120-year cycle in a fixed order: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17.

How your first period is set

The cycle starts from the ruler of your Moon's nakshatra. Only the part of that first period the Moon had not yet travelled through its nakshatra remains at birth. Each period divides into sub-periods (antardasha), and those divide again, down five levels to the prana dasha. Click any row in the result to open its sub-periods.

How accurate are the dates?

Dasha dates follow the Moon, which moves about half a degree an hour. One hour of error in a birth time moves every dasha boundary by roughly 4% of the first period's length, which for a 20-year Venus dasha is close to ten months. So exact dates need an accurate birth time. The order of periods does not change.

Other dasha systems

The result also lets you switch to two other systems: the Yogini dasha, a 36-year cycle of eight Yoginis, and the Chara dasha of the Jaimini tradition.

Frequently asked questions

Which dasha am I running now?
Enter your birth details above. The result marks the mahadasha, antardasha and deeper periods running today.
What is the difference between mahadasha and antardasha?
A mahadasha is a major period, lasting 6 to 20 years in Vimshottari. Each one divides into nine antardashas, or sub-periods, in the same proportions, starting with its own planet.
Why do different websites give different dasha dates?
Usually because of the ayanamsa used, the length of the year assumed, or a wrong timezone for the birth. Small differences in the Moon’s position move dasha dates by weeks or months.
