What is Ashtakavarga?

Ashtakavarga, “eight sources”, scores each sign of the chart from eight points of view: the seven planets and the ascendant. Each gives a benefic point (bindu) to the signs where, by Parashara's tables, it supports a planet. The result is each planet's own table, its Bhinnashtakavarga, and their total, the Sarvashtakavarga.

The Sarvashtakavarga always adds up to 337 points across the twelve signs, an average of 28 a house. A house with more than 28 is strong and its matters come more easily; one with fewer than 25 needs more effort.

Ashtakavarga and transits

Its main use is in judging transits. A planet passing through a sign where it has many points in its own Bhinnashtakavarga tends to give good results there, and few points the opposite. This is why two people with the same Sade Sati can have very different experiences of it.

How this calculator works

Planetary positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris, the reference used by professional astrology software, converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard in India and Nepal.

Your birth time is converted using the timezone history of your birthplace, including old offsets such as Nepal's +05:30 before 1986 and wartime clock changes. Getting that wrong shifts every position, and generic calculators often do. The chart is calculated in your browser: your birth date and time are never sent to us, and the place search sends only the town name you type.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Sarvashtakavarga score?
Above 28 points in a house is above average and good for that house’s matters. Below 25 is weak. The total is always 337.
What is the difference between SAV and BAV?
BAV (Bhinnashtakavarga) is one planet’s table of points by sign. SAV (Sarvashtakavarga) adds all seven planets’ tables together, giving the overall strength of each house.
