What is your rashi?

Your rashi is the sign the Moon occupied when you were born. In Vedic astrology it matters at least as much as the ascendant, because it describes the mind and emotional life. It is the sign daily horoscopes (rashifal) are written for. Transits are counted from it, Sade Sati is judged from it, and it is one of the factors compared in kundli matching. Read about each of the 12 signs.

Why it differs from your Western sign

Western astrology's star sign is the position of the Sun in the tropical zodiac. Your rashi is the position of the Moon in the sidereal zodiac, which today sits about 24° behind the tropical one. They are different planets measured against different zodiacs, so most people's rashi is not their Western sign.

Does the birth time matter?

The Moon stays in each sign for about two and a quarter days, so the date alone is usually enough. If the Moon changed sign on your birth date, you need the time to know which side of the change you were born on.

How this calculator works

Planetary positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris, the reference used by professional astrology software, converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard in India and Nepal.

Your birth time is converted using the timezone history of your birthplace, including old offsets such as Nepal's +05:30 before 1986 and wartime clock changes. Getting that wrong shifts every position, and generic calculators often do. The chart is calculated in your browser: your birth date and time are never sent to us, and the place search sends only the town name you type.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between rashi and sun sign?
Your rashi is the Moon’s sign in the sidereal zodiac, used in Vedic astrology. Your sun sign, as Western astrology uses it, is the Sun’s sign in the tropical zodiac. They are usually different.
Which is more important, lagna or rashi?
Both. The lagna, or ascendant, describes the body and life direction, and the rashi describes the mind and emotions. Vedic astrologers read the chart from both.
Is the rashi used for Sade Sati?
Yes. Sade Sati is the roughly seven and a half years Saturn takes to cross the sign before your Moon sign, the sign itself, and the sign after it.
