Ascendant Calculator (Lagna)
Find your lagna, the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth, from your exact time and place.
What is the ascendant?
The ascendant, or lagna, is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. Every house in the chart is counted from it, and it describes the body, the temperament and the direction a life tends to take. The planet that rules it, your lagna lord, carries your constitution through life.
Why the birth time matters most here
The ascendant moves through all twelve signs every day, so each sign rises for about two hours on average. Some signs rise faster or slower depending on your latitude. A birth near the change from one sign to the next can flip the lagna with an error of a few minutes, and with it every house in the chart. If you are unsure of your time, the full kundli shows how much your chart depends on it.
How this calculator works
Planetary positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris, the reference used by professional astrology software, converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard in India and Nepal.
Your birth time is converted using the timezone history of your birthplace, including old offsets such as Nepal's +05:30 before 1986 and wartime clock changes. Getting that wrong shifts every position, and generic calculators often do. The chart is calculated in your browser: your birth date and time are never sent to us, and the place search sends only the town name you type.
