What is the navamsa?

The navamsa divides each sign into nine parts of 3°20′, the same span as a nakshatra pada. It is the most important of the divisional charts. It is read for marriage and partnership, and for the inner strength of every planet: a planet weak in the birth chart but strong in the navamsa is said to deliver more than it first appears to.

Vargottama planets

A planet in the same sign in the birth chart and the navamsa is called vargottama. The classics treat it as a mark of strength, much like being in its own sign.

Why the navamsa needs an accurate time

The navamsa ascendant changes about every 13 minutes, because a 3°20′ part of the rising sign passes in that time on average. So it is far more sensitive to the birth time than the birth chart. The full kundli shows all 16 divisional charts and lets you compare any two side by side. To see what each of the others is read for, and how it is calculated, see the divisional charts.

How this calculator works

Planetary positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris, the reference used by professional astrology software, converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard in India and Nepal.

Your birth time is converted using the timezone history of your birthplace, including old offsets such as Nepal's +05:30 before 1986 and wartime clock changes. Getting that wrong shifts every position, and generic calculators often do. The chart is calculated in your browser: your birth date and time are never sent to us, and the place search sends only the town name you type.

Frequently asked questions

What is the D9 chart used for?
Mainly for marriage and the nature of the spouse, and for judging how strong each planet really is.
What does vargottama mean?
A planet in the same sign in the birth chart (D1) and the navamsa (D9). It is treated as a mark of strength.
Is the navamsa more important than the birth chart?
No. The birth chart (D1) is the primary chart. The navamsa refines it, showing how the promise of the birth chart matures.
