What is Yogini dasha?

Yogini dasha divides life into periods ruled by eight Yoginis, each linked to a planet, in a cycle of 36 years. It is especially popular in North India and Nepal, where astrologers often use it to confirm what the Vimshottari dasha shows.

The eight, in order, with their planets and years: Mangala (Moon, 1), Pingala (Sun, 2), Dhanya (Jupiter, 3), Bhramari (Mars, 4), Bhadrika (Mercury, 5), Ulka (Saturn, 6), Siddha (Venus, 7) and Sankata (Rahu, 8). Mangala, Dhanya, Bhadrika and Siddha are traditionally favourable; Pingala, Bhramari, Ulka and Sankata are more demanding.

How your first Yogini is found

Take the number of your Moon's nakshatra (Ashwini is 1), add 3 and divide by 8. The remainder gives the first Yogini, counting Mangala as 1, with a remainder of 0 meaning Sankata. As in Vimshottari, only the part of that first period the Moon had not yet travelled through its nakshatra remains at birth. Each period divides into antardashas and pratyantardashas; this calculator stops there, as the sources do.

How this calculator works

Planetary positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris, the reference used by professional astrology software, converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard in India and Nepal.

Your birth time is converted using the timezone history of your birthplace, including old offsets such as Nepal's +05:30 before 1986 and wartime clock changes. Getting that wrong shifts every position, and generic calculators often do. The chart is calculated in your browser: your birth date and time are never sent to us, and the place search sends only the town name you type.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Yogini dasha cycle?
36 years: the eight Yogini periods of 1 to 8 years each. A long life runs through the cycle two or three times.
Is Sankata Yogini dasha bad?
Sankata, ruled by Rahu, is the most demanding of the eight and is associated with upheaval. What it brings depends on Rahu’s condition in your chart, and many people find it a period of necessary change rather than misfortune.
Should I use Yogini or Vimshottari dasha?
Both. Vimshottari is the primary system; Yogini is used alongside it, and a period both systems mark out deserves the most attention.
