What is a dasha?
A dasha is a period of life ruled by one planet or sign. Vedic astrology times events by which period is running: the chart shows what is promised, and the dasha shows when it is likely to arrive.
Which dasha system should I use?
Vimshottari is the standard. Almost every reading, panchang and astrologer in India and Nepal means Vimshottari when they say “your dasha”. It is a 120-year cycle of planets set by your Moon's nakshatra. Vimshottari dasha calculator.

The result below lets you switch between all three. When two systems agree on a period, astrologers give it more weight.
How this calculator works
Planetary positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris, the reference used by professional astrology software, converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard in India and Nepal.
Your birth time is converted using the timezone history of your birthplace, including old offsets such as Nepal's +05:30 before 1986 and wartime clock changes. Getting that wrong shifts every position, and generic calculators often do. The chart is calculated in your browser: your birth date and time are never sent to us, and the place search sends only the town name you type.
