What is Rahu kaal?
Rahu kaal is one eighth of the daytime, from sunrise to sunset, ruled by Rahu. Tradition advises against beginning anything important in it: a journey, a purchase, a ceremony or a new venture. Work already under way can continue.
Which eighth it is depends on the weekday: the 8th on Sunday, 2nd on Monday, 7th on Tuesday, 5th on Wednesday, 6th on Thursday, 4th on Friday, 3rd on Saturday. Because the length of the day changes through the year and from place to place, so do the times: Rahu kaal is always calculated from the local sunrise and sunset, never from fixed clock hours.
How it is calculated
Planet positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard in India and Nepal. Sunrise and sunset are the visible ones, the upper edge of the Sun with atmospheric refraction, as almanacs print them. Each limb of the panchang is listed with the exact time it ends, so a tithi or nakshatra that changes during the day shows both.
