What the D1 shows

The D1 is the birth chart itself: each planet in the sign it actually occupies. Everything else in Vedic astrology, every divisional chart, every yoga and every dasha, starts from it.

It describes the body and the life as a whole. The divisional charts are read to refine it, never to replace it: a promise that is absent from the D1 cannot be supplied by a varga.

The D1 is one of the seven vargas whose dignities are summed into Saptavargaja bala, part of a planet's Shadbala strength.

How accurate must the birth time be?

The ascendant moves through the whole zodiac in a day, about one sign every two hours, so the finer the division, the sooner its ascendant changes. For the D1 an error of a few minutes rarely matters, except when the ascendant is near the edge of a sign. The planets move far more slowly, so their D1 signs are reliable even when the ascendant is not, the Moon excepted in the finest charts.
