What the D30 shows

The Trimsamsa is read for misfortune: illness, accidents and hidden troubles. It is the one varga whose parts are unequal, and the only one in which the Sun and Moon own no portion.

Each sign is divided among the five true planets, Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury and Venus, in bands of 5°, 5°, 8°, 7° and 5°. Which planet’s band a planet falls in describes the kind of difficulty it is associated with.

The D30 is one of the seven vargas whose dignities are summed into Saptavargaja bala, part of a planet's Shadbala strength.

How the D30 is calculated

Each sign is divided into five unequal bands. Odd signs: Mars to 5°, Saturn to 10°, Jupiter to 18°, Mercury to 25°, Venus to 30°. Even signs reverse the order: Venus to 5°, Mercury to 12°, Jupiter to 20°, Saturn to 25°, Mars to 30°. Each band goes to the sign of that planet matching the parity of the sign.

For example, a planet at 17°24′ Taurus, which puts it in Pisces in the D30.

Odd signs (Aries, Gemini, …)
0° to 5°Aries
5° to 10°Aquarius
10° to 18°Sagittarius
18° to 25°Gemini

Even signs (Taurus, Cancer, …)

12° to 20°Pisces
20° to 25°Capricorn
25° to 30°Scorpio

How accurate must the birth time be?

The ascendant moves through the whole zodiac in a day, about one sign every two hours, so the finer the division, the sooner its ascendant changes. For the D30 that is about every 24 minutes on average. A birth time recorded to the nearest few minutes is usually enough. The planets move far more slowly, so their D30 signs are reliable even when the ascendant is not, the Moon excepted in the finest charts.
