The story of Jyeshtha
Jyeshtha belongs to Indra, king of the gods, who defeated the demon Vritra and freed the waters. Its symbol is a circular amulet or an earring. It is the nakshatra of seniority and of the burden that comes with it.
Jyeshtha as your birth nakshatra
Your janma (birth) nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied when you were born. It is read as the clearest picture of the mind and temperament. When the Moon is in Jyeshtha:
Protective and responsible, you take on seniority early and shield those around you. There is power and seriousness here; generosity keeps that authority kind.
Jyeshtha gives authority, intelligence and a protective instinct. These people take charge, often from an early age, and look after others. They can be secretive and proud, and they may feel the weight of responsibility as loneliness.
Strengths
- Leadership
- Protectiveness
- Resourcefulness
- Courage
Challenges
- Pride
- Secrecy
- A feeling of isolation
The nakshatra is one layer of a chart. The sign the Moon is in, the planets aspecting it and the rest of the chart all change how these traits show.
Career and work
Management, administration, the military and police, research, and occult or esoteric study.
Love and relationships
Protective and generous, but guarded. They need a partner who respects their independence.
The four padas of Jyeshtha
Each nakshatra is divided into four padas (quarters) of 3°20′. Each pada falls in a navamsa sign, which colours the nakshatra with that sign's temperament. This is why two people born in the same nakshatra can read quite differently.
Pada 1 · Scorpio 16°40′ – Scorpio 20°00′
Navamsa in Sagittarius
The Sagittarius navamsa adds a tone that is optimistic, principled and far-seeing; drawn to learning, travel and meaning.
Name syllable: No (नो)
Pada 2 · Scorpio 20°00′ – Scorpio 23°20′
Navamsa in Capricorn
The Capricorn navamsa adds a tone that is disciplined, ambitious and patient; climbs by responsibility and endurance.
Name syllable: Ya (या)
Pada 3 · Scorpio 23°20′ – Scorpio 26°40′
Navamsa in Aquarius
The Aquarius navamsa adds a tone that is independent, idealistic and inventive; thinks in terms of the group and the future.
Name syllable: Yi (यी)
Pada 4 · Scorpio 26°40′ – Scorpio 30°00′
Navamsa in Pisces
The Pisces navamsa adds a tone that is compassionate, imaginative and receptive; finds strength in faith and surrender. This pada is gandanta, the knot where a water sign meets a fire sign. A Moon here is traditionally given a remedial ritual (shanti) after birth.
Name syllable: Yu (यू)
Baby names for Jyeshtha nakshatra
In the naming tradition (namakarana) followed across India and Nepal, a child's name begins with the syllable of the pada the Moon occupied at birth. For Jyeshtha the four syllables are:
| Pada | Syllable | Devanagari |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | No | नो |
| 2 | Ya | या |
| 3 | Yi | यी |
| 4 | Yu | यू |
You need the pada, not just the nakshatra, so the birth time matters. A few panchangs differ by a syllable, so families often follow the one their priest uses. Find the nakshatra and pada for a birth.
Jyeshtha nakshatra marriage matching
The average guna milan score between Jyeshtha and each other nakshatra, taken over every Moon position in both and counted either way round. A real match depends on the exact padas and on who is the bride, so use these as a guide and check the exact pair.
Ruling planet and dasha
The Vimshottari dasha, the most widely used timing system in Vedic astrology, starts from the Moon's nakshatra. If you were born with the Moon in Jyeshtha, your first mahadasha is Mercury's, which lasts 17 years in full. Only the part the Moon had not yet travelled through Jyeshtha remains at birth: a Moon early in the nakshatra leaves most of the period to run, and a Moon near its end leaves little.
Calculate your own dasha periods with exact dates, down to the prana dasha.
Gana, yoni and nature
Rakshasa gana. The name sounds harsh, but it describes intensity rather than wickedness: an independent, strong-willed and self-protective temperament.
Its yoni, the animal that stands for a nakshatra's instinctive nature, is the deer. Both gana and yoni are among the eight factors (kootas) compared in traditional kundli matching. Jyeshtha shares the deer yoni with Anuradha, the best yoni match. Its sworn enemy is the dog, the yoni of Ardra and Mula, which scores no yoni points in matching.
In muhurta, the choosing of auspicious times, Jyeshtha is classed as sharp (tikshna): suited to ending, severing and intense practices.
