The story of Magha
Magha belongs to the Pitris, the ancestors, and its symbol is a royal throne. It is the nakshatra of lineage: of kings who sit on the thrones of their forefathers, and of everyone’s debt to those who came before. Offerings to the ancestors are traditionally made under it.
Magha as your birth nakshatra
Your janma (birth) nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied when you were born. It is read as the clearest picture of the mind and temperament. When the Moon is in Magha:
Ancestral pride and a sense of lineage run deep. You are drawn to honour, tradition and leadership, and rise to positions of respect. Humility keeps the throne secure.
Magha natives carry themselves with dignity and expect respect. They are proud of their family and heritage, generous to those who are loyal, and comfortable with authority. They can be traditional and status-conscious, but at best they are noble in the old sense: they protect those below them.
Strengths
- Dignity
- Leadership
- Loyalty to family and tradition
- Generosity
Challenges
- Pride
- Arrogance
- Living on past glory
The nakshatra is one layer of a chart. The sign the Moon is in, the planets aspecting it and the rest of the chart all change how these traits show.
Career and work
Leadership and administration, politics, history and archaeology, family businesses, and anything with ceremony or rank.
Love and relationships
Loyal and protective, with high expectations. Family and lineage matter a great deal to them.
The four padas of Magha
Each nakshatra is divided into four padas (quarters) of 3°20′. Each pada falls in a navamsa sign, which colours the nakshatra with that sign's temperament. This is why two people born in the same nakshatra can read quite differently.
Pada 1 · Leo 0°00′ – Leo 3°20′
Navamsa in Aries
The Aries navamsa adds a tone that is direct, enterprising and quick to act; happiest when leading from the front. This pada is gandanta, the knot where a water sign meets a fire sign. A Moon here is traditionally given a remedial ritual (shanti) after birth.
Name syllable: Ma (मा)
Pada 2 · Leo 3°20′ – Leo 6°40′
Navamsa in Taurus
The Taurus navamsa adds a tone that is steady, sensual and loyal; builds slowly and holds on to what it builds.
Name syllable: Mi (मी)
Pada 3 · Leo 6°40′ – Leo 10°00′
Navamsa in Gemini
The Gemini navamsa adds a tone that is curious, articulate and adaptable; thinks by talking and learns by connecting ideas.
Name syllable: Mu (मू)
Pada 4 · Leo 10°00′ – Leo 13°20′
Navamsa in Cancer
The Cancer navamsa adds a tone that is protective, intuitive and home-loving; strength comes through care for others.
Name syllable: Me (मे)
Baby names for Magha nakshatra
In the naming tradition (namakarana) followed across India and Nepal, a child's name begins with the syllable of the pada the Moon occupied at birth. For Magha the four syllables are:
| Pada | Syllable | Devanagari |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ma | मा |
| 2 | Mi | मी |
| 3 | Mu | मू |
| 4 | Me | मे |
You need the pada, not just the nakshatra, so the birth time matters. A few panchangs differ by a syllable, so families often follow the one their priest uses. Find the nakshatra and pada for a birth.
Magha nakshatra marriage matching
The average guna milan score between Magha and each other nakshatra, taken over every Moon position in both and counted either way round. A real match depends on the exact padas and on who is the bride, so use these as a guide and check the exact pair.

Ruling planet and dasha
The Vimshottari dasha, the most widely used timing system in Vedic astrology, starts from the Moon's nakshatra. If you were born with the Moon in Magha, your first mahadasha is Ketu's, which lasts 7 years in full. Only the part the Moon had not yet travelled through Magha remains at birth: a Moon early in the nakshatra leaves most of the period to run, and a Moon near its end leaves little.
Calculate your own dasha periods with exact dates, down to the prana dasha.
Gana, yoni and nature
Rakshasa gana. The name sounds harsh, but it describes intensity rather than wickedness: an independent, strong-willed and self-protective temperament.
Its yoni, the animal that stands for a nakshatra's instinctive nature, is the rat. Both gana and yoni are among the eight factors (kootas) compared in traditional kundli matching. Magha shares the rat yoni with Purva Phalguni, the best yoni match. Its sworn enemy is the cat, the yoni of Punarvasu and Ashlesha, which scores no yoni points in matching.
In muhurta, the choosing of auspicious times, Magha is classed as fierce (ugra): suited to bold, confrontational or demanding acts rather than gentle ones.
