How it forms

A planet is debilitated, in the sign where it is weakest, and at least one recognised condition cancels that debilitation (neecha bhanga). The conditions the engine checks:

  • Its dispositor in a kendraClassical

The lord of the sign it occupies is in a kendra from the ascendant or the Moon.

  • Its exaltation lord in a kendraClassical

The lord of its exaltation sign is in a kendra from the ascendant or the Moon.

  • The two lords in mutual kendrasClassical

Its dispositor and its exaltation lord stand in kendras from each other.

  • Aspected by its dispositorClassical

The lord of the sign it occupies aspects it.

  • The planet exalted there in a kendraLater classical

The planet that is exalted in that same sign sits in a kendra.

  • Joined by its exaltation lordModern

The lord of its exaltation sign joins or aspects it.

  • Exchange with its dispositorModern

It and the lord of its sign occupy each other’s signs.

  • Exalted in the navamsaModern

It is exalted in the navamsa (D-9).

What it gives

Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga. A life that turns around. In this planet’s domain you start from scarcity, humiliation or insecurity, and that very disadvantage becomes the engine of later distinction. The rise usually comes in the dasha of the planet or its canceller, after a clear low point. People with this yoga show unusual empathy for those who struggle, and are admired because nothing was handed to them.

Neecha Bhanga alone. An early weakness does not last. Matters ruled by this planet begin with struggle, but support or skill neutralises the handicap.

What weakens it

Each of these makes the yoga weaker without removing it. The tag says how established the rule is.

How common is it?

We cast 20,000 charts with this site's engine, for random birth times and places between 1940 and 2010, and counted. Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga appeared in 50.7% of them: about five charts in ten. It held in full, with none of its weakening conditions, in 15.8%; in the rest it was present in a weaker form.

A rule that appears in about five charts in ten cannot mark anyone out on its own. What matters is its strength, and whether anything in the chart cancels it, which is why the engine grades each one rather than simply reporting it.

Where this rule comes from

It becomes Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga, rather than a cancellation alone, when one of the first two conditions holds (Phaladeepika 7.26) and the planet is either functionally good for your ascendant or placed in a kendra or trikona. Two further conditions from Jataka Parijata, on the navamsa and shashtiamsa, are not checked.
