How it forms

Each of the five true planets, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, forms a yoga of its own when it sits in its own sign or its sign of exaltation, and that sign is a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) from the ascendant.

The Sun and Moon form no Mahapurusha yoga, and neither do Rahu and Ketu, which own no sign. A chart can hold more than one.

What it gives

Each of the five gives the character of its planet at its best: Mars’s courage, Mercury’s intellect, Jupiter’s judgement, Venus’s refinement, Saturn’s endurance. Each has its own page.

What weakens it

Each of these makes the yoga weaker without removing it. The tag says how established the rule is.

How common is it?

We cast 20,000 charts with this site's engine, for random birth times and places between 1940 and 2010, and counted. Pancha Mahapurusha Yoga appeared in 38.1% of them: about one chart in three. It held in full, with none of its weakening conditions, in 11.0%; in the rest it was present in a weaker form.

A rule that appears in about one chart in three cannot mark anyone out on its own. What matters is its strength, and whether anything in the chart cancels it, which is why the engine grades each one rather than simply reporting it.
