How it forms

Mars sits in its own sign or its sign of exaltation (Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn), and that sign is a kendra, the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house, counted from the ascendant.

BPHS adds that the planet must be strong. The engine reads that as Mars’s Shadbala reaching the minimum BPHS sets; below it, the yoga is reported in a weaker form.

What it gives

You have a commander’s constitution: resilient, brave, quick to act and unwilling to be dominated. You lead naturally where nerve is needed: the armed forces, policing, surgery, engineering, sport or property. You earn a reputation for doing what others avoid. The danger is a fierce temper and forcing outcomes; the yoga matures when courage learns restraint.

What weakens it

Each of these makes the yoga weaker without removing it. The tag says how established the rule is.

  • The planet’s Shadbala (sixfold strength) is below the minimum BPHS setsClassical
  • The planet is combust, too close to the SunClassical
  • The planet is debilitated in the navamsa (D-9)Classical
  • The planet loses a planetary warClassical
  • The planet is joined by the Sun or the MoonLater classical
  • The planet also rules the 6th, 8th or 12th houseLater classical
  • The planet is joined by Rahu, Ketu, Saturn or MarsModern
