How it forms

The lords of two houses each sit in the other’s sign. Mars in Taurus with Venus in Aries is an exchange between Mars’s and Venus’s houses. Phaladeepika sorts exchanges into three kinds by which houses are involved.

  • Maha ParivartanaLater classical

Between two good houses: neither is a dusthana (6th, 8th, 12th) and neither is the 3rd.

The two houses reinforce each other as if each lord held the other’s keys. The benefit is released in the dasha of either planet.

  • Khala ParivartanaLater classical

One of the two houses is the 3rd, and neither is a dusthana.

Matters of the two houses swing between bold success and rash setbacks; measured risk converts the swings into achievement.

  • Dainya ParivartanaLater classical

One or both houses are a dusthana. When both are, Uttara Kalamrita 4.22 also reads the exchange as a Viparita Raja Yoga, and the reading says so.

The promise of the good house is hard-won, drained from time to time by loss or crisis, so prudence pays.

How common is it?

We cast 20,000 charts with this site's engine, for random birth times and places between 1940 and 2010, and counted. Parivartana Yoga appeared in 39.4% of them: about one chart in three. It held in full, with none of its weakening conditions, in 39.4%.

A rule that appears in about one chart in three cannot mark anyone out on its own. What matters is its strength, and whether anything in the chart cancels it, which is why the engine grades each one rather than simply reporting it.
