Budh Mantra
The mantras of Mercury, the planet of intelligence, speech, learning, trade and communication. Traditionally chanted on Wednesday, in the morning.
Beej mantra
ॐ ब्रां ब्रीं ब्रौं सः बुधाय नमः
Om Braam Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah
Meaning: The seed syllables of Mercury, followed by a salutation to Mercury. Beej mantras carry no sentence meaning: the syllables themselves are the invocation.
Name mantra
ॐ बुं बुधाय नमः
Om Bum Budhaya Namah
Meaning: Salutations to Budha, Mercury.
Navagraha Stotram verse
प्रियङ्गुकलिकाश्यामं रूपेणाप्रतिमं बुधम्। सौम्यं सौम्यगुणोपेतं तं बुधं प्रणमाम्यहम्॥
Priyangu-kalika-shyamam rupenapratimam budham Saumyam saumya-gunopetam tam budham pranamamyaham
Meaning: I bow to Budha, dark as the priyangu bud, of matchless form, gentle and full of gentle virtues.
How to chant
Sit facing east or north after bathing, and chant at a steady pace, aloud or under the breath. A mala of 108 beads keeps the count: one round is one mala. Most people chant one or more malas daily; a full anushthana, the traditional complete course, is a fixed total spread over days or weeks.
Mantras are a devotional practice, kept for peace of mind and as a traditional remedy. They are not a substitute for medical, legal or financial advice. For a planned anushthana, families usually consult a priest, who also checks the pronunciation.
For Mercury, the day is Wednesday, in the morning. The count commonly given for a full anushthana is 9,000 repetitions; traditions vary, and some multiply it by four in this age.
