Mangal Mantra
The mantras of Mars, the planet of courage, energy, property, siblings and the resolve to act. Traditionally chanted on Tuesday, in the morning.
Beej mantra
ॐ क्रां क्रीं क्रौं सः भौमाय नमः
Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah
Meaning: The seed syllables of Mars, followed by a salutation to Mars. Beej mantras carry no sentence meaning: the syllables themselves are the invocation.
Name mantra
ॐ अं अङ्गारकाय नमः
Om Am Angarakaya Namah
Meaning: Salutations to Angaraka, the glowing one, Mars.
Navagraha Stotram verse
धरणीगर्भसम्भूतं विद्युत्कान्तिसमप्रभम्। कुमारं शक्तिहस्तं तं मङ्गलं प्रणमाम्यहम्॥
Dharani-garbha-sambhutam vidyut-kanti-samaprabham Kumaram shakti-hastam tam mangalam pranamamyaham
Meaning: I bow to Mangala, born of the Earth, shining like lightning, the youth who holds the spear.
How to chant
Sit facing east or north after bathing, and chant at a steady pace, aloud or under the breath. A mala of 108 beads keeps the count: one round is one mala. Most people chant one or more malas daily; a full anushthana, the traditional complete course, is a fixed total spread over days or weeks.
Mantras are a devotional practice, kept for peace of mind and as a traditional remedy. They are not a substitute for medical, legal or financial advice. For a planned anushthana, families usually consult a priest, who also checks the pronunciation.
For Mars, the day is Tuesday, in the morning. The count commonly given for a full anushthana is 10,000 repetitions; traditions vary, and some multiply it by four in this age.
