Surya Mantra

The mantras of the Sun, the planet of vitality, confidence, the father, authority and recognition. Traditionally chanted on Sunday, at sunrise.

Beej mantra

ॐ ह्रां ह्रीं ह्रौं सः सूर्याय नमः

Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah

Meaning: The seed syllables of the Sun, followed by a salutation to the Sun. Beej mantras carry no sentence meaning: the syllables themselves are the invocation.

Name mantra

ॐ सूर्याय नमः

Om Suryaya Namah

Meaning: Salutations to Surya, the Sun.

Navagraha Stotram verse

जपाकुसुमसङ्काशं काश्यपेयं महाद्युतिम्। तमोऽरिं सर्वपापघ्नं प्रणतोऽस्मि दिवाकरम्॥

Japakusuma-sankasham kashyapeyam mahadyutim Tamorim sarva-papaghnam pranato smi divakaram

Meaning: I bow to the maker of the day, red as the hibiscus flower, son of Kashyapa, of great brilliance: the enemy of darkness, destroyer of every wrong.

How to chant

Sit facing east or north after bathing, and chant at a steady pace, aloud or under the breath. A mala of 108 beads keeps the count: one round is one mala. Most people chant one or more malas daily; a full anushthana, the traditional complete course, is a fixed total spread over days or weeks.

Mantras are a devotional practice, kept for peace of mind and as a traditional remedy. They are not a substitute for medical, legal or financial advice. For a planned anushthana, families usually consult a priest, who also checks the pronunciation.

For the Sun, the day is Sunday, at sunrise. The count commonly given for a full anushthana is 7,000 repetitions; traditions vary, and some multiply it by four in this age.
