Guru Mantra

The mantras of Jupiter, the planet of wisdom, teachers, children, fortune and faith. Traditionally chanted on Thursday, in the morning.

Beej mantra

ॐ ग्रां ग्रीं ग्रौं सः गुरवे नमः

Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah

Meaning: The seed syllables of Jupiter, followed by a salutation to Jupiter. Beej mantras carry no sentence meaning: the syllables themselves are the invocation.

Name mantra

ॐ बृं बृहस्पतये नमः

Om Brim Brihaspataye Namah

Meaning: Salutations to Brihaspati, Jupiter, teacher of the gods.

Navagraha Stotram verse

देवानां च ऋषीणां च गुरुं काञ्चनसन्निभम्। बुद्धिभूतं त्रिलोकेशं तं नमामि बृहस्पतिम्॥

Devanam cha rishinam cha gurum kanchana-sannibham Buddhi-bhutam trilokesham tam namami brihaspatim

Meaning: I bow to Brihaspati, teacher of gods and sages, golden in colour, wisdom itself, lord of the three worlds.

How to chant

Sit facing east or north after bathing, and chant at a steady pace, aloud or under the breath. A mala of 108 beads keeps the count: one round is one mala. Most people chant one or more malas daily; a full anushthana, the traditional complete course, is a fixed total spread over days or weeks.

Mantras are a devotional practice, kept for peace of mind and as a traditional remedy. They are not a substitute for medical, legal or financial advice. For a planned anushthana, families usually consult a priest, who also checks the pronunciation.

For Jupiter, the day is Thursday, in the morning. The count commonly given for a full anushthana is 19,000 repetitions; traditions vary, and some multiply it by four in this age.
