Chandra Mantra
The mantras of the Moon, the planet of the mind, emotions, the mother and peace of mind. Traditionally chanted on Monday, in the evening.
Beej mantra
ॐ श्रां श्रीं श्रौं सः चन्द्राय नमः
Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah
Meaning: The seed syllables of the Moon, followed by a salutation to the Moon. Beej mantras carry no sentence meaning: the syllables themselves are the invocation.
Name mantra
ॐ सोमाय नमः
Om Somaya Namah
Meaning: Salutations to Soma, the Moon.
Navagraha Stotram verse
दधिशङ्खतुषाराभं क्षीरोदार्णवसम्भवम्। नमामि शशिनं सोमं शम्भोर्मुकुटभूषणम्॥
Dadhi-shankha-tusharabham kshirodarnava-sambhavam Namami shashinam somam shambhor mukuta-bhushanam
Meaning: I bow to Soma, the Moon, white as curd, conch and snow, born of the ocean of milk, the jewel on Shiva’s crown.
How to chant
Sit facing east or north after bathing, and chant at a steady pace, aloud or under the breath. A mala of 108 beads keeps the count: one round is one mala. Most people chant one or more malas daily; a full anushthana, the traditional complete course, is a fixed total spread over days or weeks.
Mantras are a devotional practice, kept for peace of mind and as a traditional remedy. They are not a substitute for medical, legal or financial advice. For a planned anushthana, families usually consult a priest, who also checks the pronunciation.
For the Moon, the day is Monday, in the evening. The count commonly given for a full anushthana is 11,000 repetitions; traditions vary, and some multiply it by four in this age.
